Winners
of the First Annual Michigan/Ohio Collegiate Cyber Defense
Competition a Success
Teams
of students from 7 different two-year and four-year public and
private institutions across Michigan and Ohio participated in a
spirited competition where they built and then defended data
networks. This event was held Feb. 15-18 at ICSEC member institution
Eastern Michigan University. The exercise gave
all of the students involved a practical understanding of the
difficulties involved in defending computer networks in the
real-world.
According
to Washtenaw Community College CIS Program Manager Neil Gudsen, the
element that sets this competition apart from others was that the
competitors had to build a complete defensive strategy rather than
just attempt an offensive attack, “It was patterned after an
exercise that took place at West Point about three years ago and is
the ultimate test of skills in computer security. Teams were
required to create a network that simulated an actual business
network and then defend it from hackers while responding to
constantly changing business scenarios and new challenging attack
vectors.”
The
first place team trophy went to Baker College of Flint. Second
and third place finishers were Jackson Community
College, and ICSEC member Washtenaw
Community
College, respectively. Both
Baker College and Jackson Community
College will advance to the Midwest Regional
Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition to be held in Palos Hills, Illinois March 16-18, 2007.
Good luck and congratulations to all!
The
competition was the collaborative effort of Washtenaw Community College, Eastern
Michigan University, ICSEC, and the
Center for Systems Security and Information Assurance (CSSIA).
Sponsors also included the National Science Foundation (NSF), CISCO
Networks, EDS, CDW-G, Verizon Business, Infragard of Michigan,
